Hello everyone, the german news-outlet n-tv reports an offensive of the IS-terrorists along the kurdish lines around Mossul. As I couldn't find an english article on it (not sure if the pre-dawn offensive article on Rudaw means the same event), I'll translate the one from n-tv. I'll not translate the second part of the article as it concerns itself with the situation in Syria. http://www.n-tv.de/politik/IS-ueberrennt-Kurden-Stellungen-article17610936.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tuesday, 03. Mai 2016 Heavy fighting in the KRG IS-terrorists overrun kurdish positions The IS-terror-militia, that has come under increased pressure in recent weeks, has begun an offensive near the metropolis Mossul. It attacks multiple kurdish positions. North of Mossul, they manage to take over territory. The terror-militia 'islamic state' has attacked multiple kurdish positions north of their iraqi stronghold Mossul. According to General-Secretary Dschabbar Jawar of the Peshmerga, it is the largest offensive in months. The fighting is ongoing. US-Secretary of Defence Ashton Carter told journalists in Stuttgart, that a member of the US-forces has lost his life in fighting near Hewlêr. Military circles state that attacks have also been reported from areas around 40 kilometers west of Hewlêr, the captial of the automous region Kurdistan. The leader of the christian defence forces in Ninewe, who fight alongside the Peshmerga, says, that their positions have been overrun by the IS-terrorists at dawn. Then the islamists supposedly took over the village Tel Askof, 20 kilometers north of Mossul, temporarily. The IS-terrorists reportedly used many suicide-bombers in its advances. Only the airstrikes of the US-lead Anti-IS-coalition had allowed driving back the attackers. Usually the IS-terrorists rarely manage to break through the lines of Peshmerga. In the west and north of Iraq and the KRG, they were forced more and more onto the defensive. The IS-terrorists had conquered the metropolis Mossul in summer 2014. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I hope, naturally, that the offensive is short-lived and the IS-terrorists loose much more than the damage and casualties they cause. It looks somewhat like a deperate last gambit to push the surrounding forces away and prolong the occupation of Mossul (perhaps beyond the will/capacity of some forces to continue the siege and liberation). One drawback for the terrorists is, naturally, that they had to expose their forces for the offensive, every terrorist killed before they can return to the relative safety of Mossul means one less terrorist who could oppose the liberation of Mossul (where fortifications and the urban enviroment would've given him/her an edge). With best regards, Chatulio

Indeed. At least 400 terrorists took part in the offensive as well as dozens of armored vehicles (including SVBIEDs). According to the security council, 25 vehicles are destroyed and 80 terrorists dead. Peshmerga is surrounding Tel Askof while the coalition bombs the IS positions in the village. Unofficial sources claim the village is retaken. Will wait for an official statement |

Hello FulcrumKAF, thanks for the update! That is indeed an impressive force for the IS-terrorists and loosing as much as the reports indicate could be a serious blow to their efforts to defend their occupation of Mossul once the assault begins (these terrorists and the vehicles could've certainly wrecked havoc on some iraqi incursions into Mossul). Especially the vehicles are naturally easy targets for the coalitions planes in free terrain as they are relatively big, the anti-tank weapons can lock onto them and they are slow moving and it doesn't take much to detonate them (from the perspective of a coalition attack plane's arsenal). In an urban assault, they'd still be dangerous, but in free terrain, they are slow moving targets for the pilots. Better to destroy them now than facing them in the city later. With best regards, Chatulio

Hello kurdishpatriot, I'm sorry that Your relatives suffered through this terroristic offensive and wish them as complete and quick recovery as possible. Hopefully, this will turn out to be a last gasp of the IS-terrorists in Iraq and the KRG before they loose Mossul and can be pushed out. With best regards and wishes, Chatulio |

Two US-Trained Peshmerga Brigades to Move to Kirkuk KIRKUK — Two Peshmerga brigades, trained by US military instructors, will be deployed to Kirkuk. Shwan Shamzyani, a Peshmerga commander, told BasNews that two Peshmerga brigades trained and armed by the US will be deployed to Kirkuk next Thursday, May 5. The two brigades will be stationed on the frontlines of Peshmerga in Kirkuk province, he added. After stepping up its engagement in the anti-IS efforts in Iraq, USA trained several Peshmerga brigades in hopes of improving their military capacity for the war against IS. The United States and other members of the international coalition battling IS, have also provided Peshmerga with military supplies and training courses. After the fall of Mosul into the hands of IS in June 2014, the Kurdish forces sharply replaced the Iraqi fleeing army who abandoned its position in the face of the jihadists. Peshmerga has so far managed to contain IS advances in Kirkuk province and also liberate the surrounding areas, including Basheer village in souther Kirkuk. http://www.basnews.com/index.php/en/news/kurdistan/274069# |

Funny how Barzani arrested Haydar Shesho who fights successfully against isis. But at the same Barzani invited racist anti Kurdish assyrian militia officially trained and under the command of baghdad to mosul area. And he is not even touching them after assyrian militia fled their positions in tel iskof. It is in Barzanis blood to just oppress Kurds look at his history. Instead to oppose PKK and HPE presence in Shengal KDP should demand that PKK and HPE fighters are also deployed to mosul plains and Maxmur because they will not flee like KDP and their baathist assyrian friends.

600 Peshmerga finish their training on newly supplied US weapons and gear http://rudaw.net/Embed.aspx?ID=93548 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Peshmerga awarded 'Certificates of Training' by coalition military advisors ![]() Peshmerga soldiers with their Certificates of Training, May 5, 2016. Photo by the author. Hewlêr, Kurdistan Region – Peshmerga soldiers at the Zeravani Training Base just outside of Hewlêr were awarded certificates on Thursday after completing a nine-and-a-half week training course. The course was run by the Kurdistan Training Coordination Center (KTCC) from February 28 through to Thursday, May 5. The KTCC is made up of instructors from the militaries of Italy, the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland, Norway and Hungary -- all of whom are members of the multinational United States-led coalition fighting ISIS. The course, which taught the Peshmerga infantry tactics, is a part of the coalition’s plan to build professional Peshmerga brigades based on US Army specifications. The Peshmerga have also been provided with equipment from the US, including body armor, helmets, first aid kits, and M16 assault rifles. Rows of High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs, Humvees) and Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAPs) vehicles were also present at Thursday’s award ceremony. The Peshmerga thanked their coalition advisors for helping them attain their new military skills. Then the newly trained personnel saluted their instructors, shook their hands, and received their “Certificates of Training”. The Peshmerga reiterated their vow to defend the Kurdish people and nation while continuing to respect human rights. Coalition personnel trained these Peshmerga in a variety of fields that must be mastered before entering battle against ISIS, everything from intelligence to physical training, including signals training, how to disarm improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and first aid. They were also shown how to use their new weapons for both offensive and defensive operations. The German commander of the KTCC, Colonel Bernd Prill, expressed his satisfaction with how the course had gone. “Our US allies have provided the Peshmerga with the equipment they need for the current fight,” he said. Prill also pointed out that ISIS is a threat to everyone, indicating that assisting the Peshmerga is in the self-interest of the coalition countries, which are also at risk of falling victim to ISIS terrorist attacks. “We achieved what was possible to achieve in these short few weeks” one of the German military instructors told Rudaw English. “Of course they will need more training in the future and will have to rehearse the skills they have learned in recent weeks.” http://rudaw.net/NewsDetails.aspx?pageid=213680 |

Hello ALAN, it's good to see the training and certificates appreciated. This likely concludes the first new training course for the US-materials and weapons at the KTCC (ten instead of four weeks). The next will then likely start a couple of days later, so the instructors have time to prepare, repair materials and so on. Maybe the new facilities at M4 and Bnaslawa will be completed in time to be used in the next courses. I hope the training will pay off in the way the instructors would prefer as well: Saving the lives of Peshmerga. With best regards, Chatulio
