Hello everyone, in another report on the website of the german military, it was announced that the german contingent receives a new commanding officer, relieving Lieutenant-Colonel Jan Heymann, who led the contingent after the death of Colonel Stephan Spöttel. http://www.einsatz.bundeswehr.de/portal/a/einsatzbw/!ut/p/c4/LYvBCsIwEET_KNtgQPGWmotXL1ovsm2WspgmJW4tFD_eBDoDAzOPgScUR_zyiMIpYoAHdAOf-1X1q6cXcfygbKXiWxYKYZ9INoJ7PXtSQ4okNYWicMkxo6Ss5pQlVLLkXIhiD12jXauPptmlf9ZcnLGn5uCu7Q3mabJ_RWCwbw!!/ A rough translation would be about as follows (translating Oberst as Colonel): -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- New contingent-commander in the KRG Hewlêr, 17.11.2015. The german contingent in Hewlêr has a new commander. Colonel Bernd Prill now commands the around 100 german soldiers in the KRG. ![]() Colonel Bernd Prill, new contingent-commander in the KRG (Source: Bundeswehr/PAO Hewlêr) The 51-years old tank-grendier thanked the german soldiers when he took command, for their dedicated work for the training of the Peshmerga so far. "Much has already been achieved by you, much still is ahead of us. From now on, we'll walk this path together, and I look forward to it.", he said in Camp Hewlêr. Colonel Prill was previously assigned to the 9th tank grenadiers-training battalion in Munster in Lower-Saxony. He took over command in Hewlêr from Leutenant-Colonel Jan Heymann, who had been commanding the german soldiers in the KRG since end of September after the death of Colonel Stephan Spöttel. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aside from that, news here currently show debates within the government on how France's request for military support could be met. Apparently it is planned to take over more responsibilities in Mali to allow the French to reassign troops. It is also discussed to speed up further military support for the KRG. Even Minister of foreign affairs Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who warned of any rash decisions, saw further military support for the KRG as a given, just the shape and timings should be, in his opinion, discussed calmly, instead of rushed. The pressure on him is increasing however, so I'll keep my eyes open for news in that regard. With best regards, Chatulio

Hello everyone, Ursula von der Leyen has, at the meeting with France, to discuss France's request for support, also stated where the german military is already commited, citing the support for the KRG first and foremost. What was important to the german press was, that she called the decision to take responsibility in the KRG to have been correct and that the recent victory in Shingal proved the correctness of the decision to supply weapons to the Peshmerga. Here is a link to the interview, though it is in german: http://www.faz.net/aktuell/politik/waffen-lieferung-an-peschmerga-laut-von-der-leyen-richtig-13917004.html Additionally, it was very unusual, that France didn't try to invoke the NATO's 'alliance-case' (an attack on one member is an attack all members), but invoked the EU's military support clauses, requiring the EU-members to provide help, from political to military. The goal seems to be also to get allies to take over other theaters of operations to free up more french troops for operations against the IS-terrorists. Germany, e.g. is being pushed to take over more responsibilities in Mali to free up the french troops there. One way or another, the french carrier Charles de Gaulle and its escort fleet had already departed for the gulf hours before the attacks occured, so the french should soon be able to step their airstrikes soon. Hello everyone, according to reports in german media (which cite syrian observers), the leadership of the IS-terrorists and their families seem to relocate from Raqqa to Mosul due to the coalition airstrikes. The report states that dozens of families of IS-leaders have relocated. (Source: http://www.n-tv.de/politik/IS-Spitze-zieht-sich-nach-Mossul-zurueck-article16380326.html) If the report is correct and the Peshmerga and the iraqi forces manage to corner them in Mosul, it could be possible to take out at least a significant portion of their leaders when Mosul is liberated, whether by the Peshmerga alone or in combination with iraqi forces. My doubts are naturally whether the iraqi forces could pull off a tight enough blockade and an effective enough urban assault. I have little doubt that the Peshmerga could pull their part off and taking out a number of IS-leaders would naturally be a great achievement. While others might follow them, those would be unlikely to have the intelligence- and military backgrounds that the current leadership possess. With best regards, Chatulio
