11.2012 KHANAQIN, Diyala— A local official source revealed Wednesday, bringing a "substantial" military force of Peshmerga to the Kurdish district of Khanaqin in anticipation of the entry of any forces belonging to Dijla operations to the district. Tension prevailed on the disputed areas after the formation of Dijla Operations Command stationed in the provinces of these regions, where Baghdad believes that it is its right to move the Iraqi army in any place, while Kurds believe that the formation of Dijla operations is a violation of the constitution and political agreements. The source told Shafaq News, that since Tuesday military forces of the Kurdish Peshmerga came to Khanaqin district and it is stationed in multiple areas of the district. He added that the purpose of bringing these forces in anticipation of the entry of forces belonging to Dijla operations to the district. Khanaqin district is considered as the disputed areas between Baghdad and Erbil with a religiously mixed of population of multiple nationalities and sects, but the majority are of Kurds. Diyala province, a restive part of Iraq outside the Kurdish autonomous region of Kurdistan but home to many Kurds. The Diyala district,www.ekurd.net which includes a string of villages and some of Iraq's oil reserves, is home to about 175,000 Kurds, most of them Shiites. In June 2006, the local council of Khanaqin proposed that the district be integrated into the autonomous Kurdistan region in northern Iraq. During the Arabisation policy of Saddam Hussein in the 1980s, a large number of Kurdish Shiites were displaced by force from Khanaqin. They started returning after the fall of Saddam in 2003. Article 140 of the Iraqi constitution is related to the normalization of the situation in Kirkuk city and other disputed areas like Khanaqin. Kurdistan's government says oil-rich Khanaqin should be part of its semi-autonomous region, which it hopes to expand in a referendum in the future. In the meantime, Khanaqin and other so-called disputed areas remain targets of Sunni Arab insurgents opposed to Kurdish expansion and vowing to hold onto land seized during ex-dictator Saddam Hussein's efforts to "Arabize" the region. shafaaq.com | Ekurd.net |

I think kurdistan should upgrade its Heavy weapons. I mean, the weapons we sent were EE-11,T-55s,MT-LBs,D-30 and S60s (also a few number of BM-21). These could do close to nothing against Iraqi armoured forces. If we cant buy new weapons,i would want KRG to at least upgrade these. Upgrade our T-55s to T-55M5 or T-55AGM. Send our Type-59s to china so they can upgrade it to T-59G (This could cost some money. But the T-59s will become HEAVILY modernized. Type-59G is a 2.5-3 generation tank. The M1A2 is a third generation tank) We should send our EE-11s to brazil so they could upgrade it to their own EE-11 standards. Im glad KRG have bought some AT missiels. |

"We are totally ready and have more than 100 vehicles of armed, loyal Peshmergas ready to take part in the war.” SULAIMANI, South Kurdistan -- Kurdish political parties say that they are ready to fight and defend Kurdistan’s territories should a conflict erupt between the Iraqi Army and the Peshmerga. The parties that met on Nov. 23 in Erbil confirmed their united stance with Kurdistan’s president on the Dijla Operations Command (DOC) being in the disputed regions. In the case of a military conflict, the parties agreed that they would not remain silent. Even the Kurdistan Islamic Union (KIU), which has been an unarmed party since its foundation, wholeheartedly expressed its readiness to fight. Relations between Kurdistan and Baghdad are at a complicated stage, which some observers believe is closer to conflict than settlement. Officials on both sides are talking about deescalating the crisis, but sending more forces to the disputed regions at the same time. Muhammad Ahmed, a KIU political bureau member, said, "Defending the achievements, security, peace and territories of Kurdistan is a national and religious obligation. All the parties and all the Kurds need to defend Kurdistan." He added, "If a war breaks out, then it will happen to all of us and we have to be united." Jalal Jawhar, a leader of the Change Movement (Gorran), said that their party is anti-war and a civil political group. He advised Iraqi citizens to take war out of their minds because "we have suffered the most in wars, especially the Kurds and the Shia." Jawhar told Rudaw that war is for armed groups and armies, and Gorran is neither of these. "But if the situation escalates to the level of occupation of our country, then we are ready with our bodies and properties and will be there before the two ruling parties," he said. Muhammad Haji Mahmud, a political bureau executive official of the Democratic Socialist Party of Kurdistan (PDSK), demonstrated his reaction to the actions of Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and Iraqi army officials by sending large numbers of armed Peshmergas to Kirkuk. Mahmud recalled that the secretary of his party was wounded during the liberation of Kirkuk in 1991, and that if war breaks out again "we are totally ready and have more than 100 vehicles of armed, loyal Peshmergas ready to take part in the war.” He explained that many of his party members are among the Peshmerga forces and many others guard party bases. "All the supporters and members of our party are ready to fight and defend Kurdistan," Mahmoud said. "We are proudly ready to fight and defend the disputed areas," said Bilal Sulaiman, leadership member of the Kurdistan Islamic Group (Komal). Sulaiman said that defending land and country was a national and religious duty. "In addition to the guards of Komal and its bases, we have hundreds of other members and supporters," he said. Komal was an armed party until 2002. After the bombardment of their base by the allied forces and the arrest of their leader, Ali Bapir, they announced that they were disarming and would continue on as a political party. Six hundred of their armed members were retired, but Sulaiman said that these Peshmergas have experience and skills. "They are at home now and can receive arms and take part. We are fully ready," he said. Rudaw |

Maliki accuses Kurdistan of raising Russian arms deal and buying arms from abroad Saturday, 01 December 2012 14:35 Shafaq News / Prime Minister, Nuri al-Maliki accused on Saturday, South Kurdistan of buying arms from outside the country, while hold it the responsibility of raising the Russian arms deal issue. Maliki said in a press conference at the Council of Ministers building attended by "Shafaq News", that "The Russian arms deal will continue after changing those responsible on it, despite attempts by outside parties to interfere in it." Maliki accused South Kurdistan of "provoking a stir over the deal", in a reference to the "territorial attempt to prevent Iraq from arming." Maliki said that "Kurdistan is doing such things at a time it is buying arms from abroad." Iraq has signed deals to buy Russian weapons worth $ 4.2 billion that included, according to Russian reports MiG-29 aircrafts, 30 attack helicopters, Mi -28, 42 Pantsir - S 1 A which are missile systems, but Baghdad announced its cancellation later. Iraq announced recently cancelling the Russian arms deal after it was marred by what is believed to be corruption, as media circulated most prominent names of suspects. Members of the State of Law coalition (SLC) accused previously South Kurdistan of trying to ruin the Russian arms deal that sparked a stir for the receipt of the close names to Prime Minister, Nuri al-Maliki involved in financial corruption of that deal. The Parliamentary Integrity Committee revealed on Thursday, the presence of government attempts to "heal the scandal" of the Russian arms deal that had been canceled because of corruption, pointing out that the Prime Minister should not be a "conspirator" on Iraq by covering up on those involved. The Parliamentary Integrity Committee revealed also last Thursday, the names of the Iraqi technical, legal and financial delegation that went to Russia to negotiate in the arms contract with it and those wanted in the investigation in the Integrity Commission. |
