Chobani Founder: Hamdi Ulukaya, Kurdish Businessman Donates $2 million for Kobane

October 8, 2014

‘Either we will be watching the massacre there and will live on with a guilty conscience or we will save people,' says Hamdi Ulukaya, Kurdish businessman who founded Chobani Greek Yogurt.

Turkish-born Hamdi Ulukaya, the founder of the U.S.-based Chobani Greek Yogurt, has donated $2 million for Kobane, the Kurdish town besieged by jihadists on Syria’s border with Turkey.

“I’m not interested in the political aspect of the situation or whoever plays what game. Either we will be watching the massacre there and will live on with a guilty conscience or we will save people,” the 42-year-old Kurdish businessman told Hürriyet.

Ulukaya, who skyrocketed to the top of the business world in the U.S. soon after arriving in the 1990s and who founded Chobani in 2007, warned that Kobane now faces the risk of a massacre at the hands of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

“While making this personal donation, I hope to encourage others to support the people of Kobane in the face of this drama. I want everyone to see this incident as a human,” he told Hürriyet.

“We will deliver the aid to NGOs in the region. It is not clear who we will choose yet, but we’re talking to everybody active on the ground. We also want local NGOs to reach us through . All applications will be evaluated throughout October,” he added.

In June, Ulukaya had dedicated his Ernst & Young World Entrepreneur of the Year 2013 award first to the "fellowship of the Turkish and Kurdish peoples and the peace between them," and also to the U.S. “I have two homelands, one where I was born, my beautiful country, Turkey; the other is the U.S., where I made my dreams come true,” he said at the ceremony back in 2013.

Speaking about Kobane, Ulukaya stressed that he is surprised to witness the "inaction of the world."

“We are the people of Anatolia. We should consider Kobane the way that we helped Somalia and other places in need. There are Turkmens, Yazidis and Kurds in Kobane. All ethnic groups are waiting for help," he said.

There are 8000 ISIS goaters left. This is a move ordered by USA&Turkey to shut the Kurds up in NK. KCK called for Kurds to continue resistance today, despite ISIS withdrawal.

And then from a strategical point of view, ISIS has a hard time advancing in the city, so they will probably bombard the whole area. Eastern Kobani is already leveled.

Liberal

President Barzani said he put pressure on US to conduct air strikes. Also its worth noting that he said the West should help the civilians and fighters of Kobane and we can confirm that he does indeed recognize Rojava. Yesterday he said before the Hewlêr agreements he got confirmation for Rojava autonomy provided that Kurds will be part of the opposition. He also stated that he has officially requested passage through Turkey to move Pesh and weapons through Turkey to Kobane.

Reports that ISIS are withdrawing from Kobane.
Amed Dicle, Cahit Mervan and other high ranked journalists has already said, it's not true.
That's turkish propaganda to shut down the serhildan in Bakur.

Good that now Kobani has more fighters and now we see how important it is to connect the 3 cantons in the future crushing all IS positions in between it can be done by YPG, HPG, Peshmerga, Jabhat Akrad and jets of allied forces... We can't be on defensive it's time for offensives, YPG proved to the world they are Heros but they were outgunned and out numbered...
