Yes, Peshmerga do have a pilot training program (i think it is officially part of Zeravani,which is part of the interior ministry, to bypass many laws) for fixed wing aircraft and helis. The CH-701 i posted on the Peshmerga thread is part of it, so is some of the gyroplanes. Peshmerga do have EC120B and have set orders for MD 530F (with state of the art tech and avionics), none of which are officially part of peshmerga (again to bypass laws). However, KRG have shown (by the way everything is organized and set up) that they will be ready to be used by Peshmerga anytime. So yes, Peshmerga do have some aircraft that can be used for observation and light attack. KRG is playing its cards cleverly. Its air defenses is another question. No sufficient info is given on the matter. From the pics ive seen it have only been MANPADS and AAA units. I hope they have other air defenses, but cant say for sure

Seems YPG have learned a lot from Assad's mistakes to not use tanks in Urban areas. If the tanks keep on being used in terrain like that, i am completely for it. However, usage of tanks like Assad have will bring only destruction. They are being used in Urban cities (where they can be destroyed like metal coffins) and they hunt the terrorists by "smoking" them out of the buildings (or at least some of the formations have been doing it lately). Im still surprised by how fast YPG managed to put the tanks into operation. I know in the video they only saw some shots fired at a distant target, but if YPG have put them into active service then im surprised (and impressed). If that's the case, then they would have some source of the necessary preparations and parts needed to put them in active service (i do not consider some tanks driving around and shooting as active service. When they are fully intergrated, orginaized and will be kept active (having spare parts,ammo etc) for a period of time with YPG i would call them active/operational part of YPG). I hope that is the case with the AFVs, and not just some ill organized tanks that was recently captured driving around and shooting at terrorists. Peshmerga used Iran as a source of ammo and spare parts (and weapons) for a short period of time for usage of heavy artillery against i-rack before the peace treaty between Iraq-Iran (remember that the Iranians were careful not to give us too much ammo in case we turned it against them). |
