Finland would like to participate in the reconstruction process of the South Kurdistan, especially in the agricultural sector Professor Serwan Baban, Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources in the Kurdistan Regional Government received H.E. Kari Kahiluoto the Finnish Ambassador of Finland in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Iraq and his accompanied Jane Hiscanin the Manager of Affairs Finland in the Middle East and North Africa. In the meeting they discussed about strengthening of relations between the South Kurdistan and Finland and the needs of the ministry and also they discussed about the Finnish companies to participate in the reconstruction of the Region, especially in the agricultural sector and irrigation and find a market to discharge the products of farmers in excess of local need, in another axis of the meeting, H.E. Ambassador confirmed that the efforts are ongoing for the opening of his country’s representation in the South Kurdistan to be a factor to deepen relations between the two sides and at all levels, in another hand H.E. How advanced is the biotechnology in Kurdistan? And do they take use of selective breeding in these fish programs? Analyzing the DNA to find the best genes (quality of flesh, size, smell etc), and put them in a separate pool to later breed them for the next generation of fish. The fish that are not in the category of "best fish" will of course be sold right away without breeding. I know many countries take use of this easy and effective way of getting quality fish, but not all countries do that. How is KRG's stance on the issue? |

To be honest i dont think KRG cares that much, they just provide funding for those who are willing to breed them, not sure about what you say, i doubt it, unfortunately

Israel exports dairy products to south Kurdistan A number of Israeli businessmen want to export Israeli dairy products to the autonomous south Kurdistan as well as opening a farm. According to Israeli Newspaper, Yedioth Ahronoth, a number of Israeli businessmen want to bring their country’s dairy products to the south Kurdistan. The newspaper also revealed that a delegation from the South Kurdistan visited an Israeli village to inspect the farm. The visit came upon a request from Israel’s biggest dairy factory, Afimilk, with branches in more than 50 countries worldwide. Kirkuk Produced 48 tons of Honey Posted: March 14, 2014 at 10:19 pm Kirkuk’s production of honey reached forty-six tons last year and it is expected to rise to sixty tons in 2014. “There are around five hundred bee keepers in the province. They produced forty-six tons of honey in 2013. This is more than the previous years,” Mahdi Mubarak Kakaee, manager of the Directorate of Agriculture (DOA) told Kirkuk Now. He also pointed out that the number of beekeepers is increasing, “People are paying closer attention to beekeeping. We offer loans through the Bank of Agriculture to every farmer intending to have an apiary. The loans vary between five to twenty five million ID and are interest free.” “Many people believe that the honey of Kirkuk is the best,” the manager of the DOA added. They are over fishing in Kurdistan. The amount of fish have decreased a lot in Dukan and Derbendixan, so we have begun to import fish from Iraq instead of doing something with the problem! This is at a time when the amount of fish meat consumed by the population is increasing very fast. KRG should finish its project in Derbendixan. There are 8 pools there, each with the capacity to grow 30 000 fish, but 6 of them are not in operation because they are not finished and there is a lack of workers for the pools (ironic when unemployment is one of the major issues facing Kurdistan). Kurdistan should not be a typical 3rd world country that does not think 2 steps ahead. Kurdistan needs to cut down fishing for now, so that the fish population in our lakes can build up their populations again. At the meantime, we should grow fish in the pools (and preferably do some selective breeding to get preferred genes in our fish). Fish is a semi-renewable resource, not a renewable one. We have to be careful not to capture more fish than the fish can reproduce. |

South Kurdistan eyes bumper crop as more farmland goes to wheat Posted on November 7, 2015 by Editorial Staff in Agriculture ERBIL-Hewler, Kurdistan region ‘Iraq’,— Osman Hamza, a 51-year-old farmer, looks forward to a productive harvest from his enormous wheat fields in the Qoshtapa village, west of Hewlêr. Kurdish officials say they are looking forward to more land being used to grow wheat, and a larger crop. “I intend to grow wheat in every inch of my 70 dunam land,” Hamza says confidently, sizing his property by the old Ottoman measure, where every dunam equals about 2,500 square meters. Though he used only parts of his land last year, it still yielded 70 tons of wheat, which he sold to the government at a price of $660 per ton. As of July this year, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has purchased over 802,000 tons of wheat, equivalent to nearly $532 million. Of that, $46,000 went to Hamza, for his 70 tons of wheat. The harvest season in Kurdistan usually begins in November and continues till mid-January. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, this year over 3 million dunam of land will be cultivated, with an estimated 1,2 million tons of production. But the ministry says the country has over 6 million dunam lands that could be used for farming. During the last seven years, the allocated land has almost doubled from 1.9 to over 3.1 million dunam, which also shows that the business is thriving. “Some 105,000 dunam was unfarmed last year in the war zones, which we hope to use this year since calm is restored in these areas,” Anwar Omar, an official at the ministry, told Rudaw. He says the ministry’s policy of helping farmers has benefitted both sides, as more farmers have taken advantage of the opportunity and boosted cultivation. “We purchase farmers’ wheat at a reasonable price and give them seeds for the next crop season at very low prices, which has returned positive results,” Omar says. According to the ministry, the area of land harvested for wheat has increased by nearly 80 percent in the last decade, with Hewlêr province enjoying the greatest agricultural growth. Government statistics show that agriculture contributes to 10 percent of the total GDP in the region, with 9 percent of the population relying on farming for its livelihood. The KRG offers farmers’ subsidies estimated at $250 million a year. The government invested $677 million between 2006-2013 and is projected to invest an estimated $1.2 billion by 2020. But the economic crisis in Iraq has also affected the farmers in Kurdistan, who fear the central government in Baghdad is no longer able to purchase portions of their harvests this year. “The Iraqi government has not indicated anything like that, but if they do, we will find buyers outside the country,” Anwar says.
