I have no clue how the relationship between Kurdistan and the Russians is working. Now Kurdistan is split in several parts. Have some Kurdish regions better relations to Russia than others? What about arms from Russia? Would Russia sell arms to the Kurds? And embedded into this question: Are the Kurds allowed and able to import weapons on their own? I mean: at least "official" the Kurdish areas are still parts of several different countries. For that reason the German arms deliveries have allways to land for a short time in Baghdad first. I don't know, if that is only symbolic or if the Iraqi government is really controlling, what we Germans are delivering to Kurdistan. Could the Iraqi government say to the KRG: "No, you are not allowed to import and buy weapons yourself without our permission"? |

So you mean the Iran don't want to see the Kurds armed and because of that Russia isn't selling arms to the Kurds? To keep the good relationship with Iran?

If i remember correctly, President Barzani did visit Russia some time ago(1-2 year) in order to talk about agreement on weapon, but they did not came to any official agreements. Now what happens in black market is another story.. However, remember this: West + US VS Russia, China(BRICS)= KRG must be careful how to play the game in order to maintain neutral reaationship with different world power. We can not and must not forget the game changer help we have got form Germany. |

Russia, pre-IS crisis (early 2014), offered Kurds a deal for helicopters (MI171Es) and transport trucks. Due to the fact that we already had the infrastructure and needed expertise to operate and maintain them, the MI-171Es were of special interest to Kurdistan. The deal was never signed due to financial issues from our side (Baghdad cut our budget in early 2014 due to disagreements between KRG and Baghdad). The deal might (but I highly doubt) be brought up again, in part due to our need for helicopters and in part to put pressure on the west to open their markets for us. We have had a deal with Russia worth 23 million dollars for some old small arms and ammunition (2011). Yes, indeed. Our relationship is much stronger with the west than Russia (especially after August last year). However, we are forced to turn to the east for weapons because the west is hindered by...well, I don't think I need to go into details of why the west does not sell us weapons. If the west chooses to open their markets, KRG will surely turn to the west/NATO to buy weapons. |

I've learned about the difficulties with the oil money and general money from Baghdad in the SK-Peshmerga thread. And again I'm asking myself, how long the USA will give the dead unity of the Iraq and the inept sectarian government of the Iraq the priority over the Kurds. Above there somebody mentioned that Russia would not sell weapons because of Iran. Can that be? Or is it only the money?
